What is Wellness?

Wellness is something you hear about daily and see all over social media, but what is wellness?

I once had an instructor compare wellness to the wheels on a bicycle, I still find it to be one of the best analogies: Wellness is made up of all the different parts of our lives, and works sort of like a wheel on your bicycle. When one area is out of balance it is like having a flat tire or a dented wheel preventing our wheel from spinning freely and making it harder to direct our course, causing all kinds of problems and accidents. When our life is in balance our wellness wheel is round, spinning freely, when our life is out of balance it is like that dented, flat wheel and can take us off course and cause "accidents" (health issues).

The World Health Organization describes Health as: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

When our mind, body, and spirit are in order we are in a state of wellness or health.

The Dr. Sears Wellness Wheel has 8 dimensions of wellness encircled by the four pillars of health that we call L.E.A.N; Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, and Nutrition. I think this is a great visual, kind of like a bicycle wheel huh?

These 8 areas are:


  1. Environmental - Your surroundings, energy, and the environment, such as clean air and water.

  2. Social -Relationships, boundaries, belonging, interactions.

  3. Occupational - finances, career, school, work/home life balance

  4. Emotional - emotions, balance, fun and laughter, self soothing skills.

  5. Spiritual - meditation, prayer, serenity, faith, trust, forgiveness.

  6. Intellectual - Stimulation, hobbies, satisfaction with skills and education, learning.

  7. Nutritional - daily habits, wise food choices, quality, self control, drink water.

  8. Physical - exercise routine, non-smoker, generally healthy, wise choices

Our focus tends to be on Physical and nutritional, with more recent focus on Emotional as well, but each "slice of the pie" works together for your over all wellness or lack of and each slice is imporant. If we dented the wheel in one area how hard would life be? What if we dented it in more than one area?? Remember that the absence of disease or infirmity does not define wellness and our goal is balance in all areas.
