There’s something deeply creative about homemaking. For those of us who love it, it’s not just about keeping things clean and organized—it’s about expression, artistry, and creating a space that feels like home. Think about Joanna Gaines and Martha Stewart—both built their careers around the art of making a home beautiful, functional, and inviting and they love it! Martha Stewart said, in her documentary, that she loves homemaking! What a great confession! Loving homemaking isn’t about obligation or tradition; it’s about creativity, comfort, and finding joy in the details.
In my own life, homemaking is an outlet for creativity. I work part-time and have a bit of an unconventional skill set—I even did maintenance at a hotel for a while, which gave me the confidence to handle many small household repairs myself. My husband is incredibly handy and works full-time, and together, we’ve found a balance that works for us. I also get so much joy in making our home a space where people feel safe, comfortable, and at home the moment they walk in the door!
If you love homemaking you may struggle with conflicting feelings like, "Am I doing my part", "Is it enough", etc. There is also a lot out there in social media about the Trad Wife that is giving some serious cringe to homemaking. A healthy atmosphere is one where you and your partner are in agreement about what your home life and work like balances look like. It only works as a healthy creative outlet if it is for the joy of it and never because you have to as some sort of subservient role. And, there is nothing that says it has to be a woman's role either, many men enjoy the creativity of the home.
In our home it works a little like this:
I work part time and the rest of the time I love caring for our home inside and out.
I am able to spend time with people who need a little company or help with things.
I'm more free to be available to family.
My husband is nearing retirement and I'm able to do some of the minor repairs around the house during the week which frees up his time on the weekend so we can go play, because tomorrow is never guaranteed.
I love seasonal decorating, arranging furniture, and adding little touches that make our space feel warm and inviting.
Cooking is one of my favorite creative expressions—experimenting with flavors, plating a meal beautifully, and making dinner a moment to look forward to.
Most nights, I have a hot meal on the table when my husband gets home—not because I “should,” but because cooking and setting the table is an act of love and creativity for me. and My husband does the dishes. which is a great deal for me!
I handle most of the general housekeeping—not as a chore, but as a way to create a peaceful and welcoming environment.
It’s not about one role being more important than the other—it’s about finding a rhythm that works for both of us.
I love homemaking and learning about the things I can do to not only create and warm and inviting space, but how to be more economical, earth friendly, and efficient in our lives.
Homemaking isn’t about meeting expectations—it’s about crafting a space that reflects who you are. Some people find their creativity in painting, music, or design; and others find it in homemaking even if they have other creative outlets. There’s no right or wrong way to express creativity, and no one should feel ashamed or embarrassed about loving what they do. If you love homemaking, that’s great. If you don’t, that’s great too. The beauty of creativity is that it takes many forms, and for some of us, the home is our canvas.
At the heart of it, homemaking is about more than just keeping a house—it’s about creating an environment where you can find peace, comfort, and solace. It’s about turning a space into a sanctuary, a place that reflects your personality and brings you joy. Whether it’s arranging flowers, trying a new recipe, or simply making a cozy corner to curl up in, homemaking can be an incredibly fulfilling form of self-expression. And that’s something worth celebrating. Embrace it!
