DIY Deodorant

Were you ever just crushed when your favorite product was discontinued? Me too!!! I've loved my Shaklee deodorant, but they are in the process of making an even better one that is more earth friendly and clean! I celebrate this, really! Really, I do! but it isn't coming out for a while and the struggle is real! So I set off to find a natural deodorant and guess what?? I didn't know that I smell. I mean, I never did before!! but it seems I do! Ewww!!

If you are like me (I lean hippie with a little bougie) I want clean, safe products that are safe for the environment too and I want them to work! It's why I use Shaklee to begin with!

I've tried brand after brand looking for a replacement! I tried a lot of them! Many of them were expensive and they still didn't work!! Again, eww! so while I wait for my new product to come out I decided I had to take matters into my own hands, well...pits. I made my own and I don't stink!! Woooot!!!

DIY While I Wait Deodorant

Tip: Always add shea butter last. When Shea Butter gets too hot it gets gritty. If this happens to you it will still work, the gritty parts will melt with the heat of your hand when you use it. If you gently melt it down again and let it cool this will often take care of the grit. If it really bothers you.

My "go-to" for supplies is Aromatics International. I find they have solid, trustworthy supplies. No membership required. Plus, many of the same products can be used in other DIY recipes too. I love DIY!!

Recipe:

A kitchen scale is needed

15 grams coconut oil ( I used unrefined solid coconut oil)

10 grams Shea Butter

5 grams cocoa butter

10 grams Baking Soda (if you are sensitive to baking soda or opposed to it, try leaving it out. The arrowroot and Kaolin powder will work well)

10 grams Arrowroot

1 Tbs Kaolin Powder

10 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil (Citrus paradisi)

10 drops Orange Essential Oil (Citrus sinensis)

Place a large heavy duty glass measuring cup over a double boiler and add the Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, and Cocoa Butter. Stir until melted. (I put the glass measuring cup into a pan of water. It sits on the bottom and I add water an inch or two around the sides instead of a double boiler)

Once the butters are melted remove from the the heat and add the Shea butter, stirring until melted. If it is not melting well you may add back to the heat. Stir in Baking Soda, Arrowroot, and Kaolin Powder until fully blended, add the essential oils. Stir well.

Pour into glass jar and immediately put the lid on it to cool. Adding the lid right away helps preserve the essential oils.

I use the short squatty mason jars (4 oz) it will not fill the entire jar. May be used right away, but will be more solid by morning.

To use, use like a cream deodorant and using your fingers get small amount from the jar and rub under your arms.

Enjoy!

PS, I'll let you know when the new deodorant comes out, I will celebrate!!
