Lisa Wonders: But Why Should I Do It?

Viparita Karani - Legs up the wall pose

Have you ever heard of people putting their legs up the wall? I remember hemp wearing, Flowy dress, hippie types doing this when I was a kid, turns out it's a real thing. In Yoga it's called Viparita (inverted) Karani (in action), and they swear they feel more calm and feel better in general by making this part of their normal routine. But Why should I do it? Do they really feel better?

How To:

It's not graceful, so just wiggle and you'll be fine.

  • Start by sitting on the floor with your rear end against the wall, then turn your legs to go up the wall as you lie on your back at the same time. You can also start by lying on the ground and placing your legs on a chair if you aren't ready to go up the wall. I like to do this in bed and put my legs up the front the headboard. Find what works for you, it gets easier over time.

  • After you are situated make sure you place your bottom near the wall or against the wall, feel free to use a cushion blanket for support under your hips.

  • Your arms can rest in any comfortable position

  • Next, pay attention to your breath and breathe slowly and fully

  • Rest

  • Try Starting with 10 minutes.

  • Use apps like Calm or Headspace during this time to help you relax

  • Take time to pray

What Does it Do?

  • It's Relaxing - really!

  • Can help calm swollen feet and ankles

  • Stretches the hamstrings

  • Bring relief to tired legs

  • Can increase your energy

  • May relieve lower back pain

  • Can be a useful tool in managing anxiety

  • Can help reduce stress

  • May help alleviate headaches

  • May help you sleep better

  • Encourages venous return

  • Stimulates the lymphatic system

I tried it and you know what? Yes, they really do feel better! Oh, it also turns out that I'm probably one of those hippie types. I'm good with it.
