Finding Ways to Cope in 2020

Or in other words, Why we put our Christmas trees up early this year.

I have always been a "Don't put the Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving!!!!" person, but not this year! I was ready 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, slyly putting out a few decorations at a time thinking no one would notice, and finally the tree went up the week before Thanksgiving!! I am not alone, For weeks now I've seen Christmas trees in windows all around our neighborhood and posts on social media filled with Christmas trees, and houses fully decked. Why? Because it makes us feel better.

Let's take a look at the Wheel of Health:

"A Wellness Wheel is a visual representation of the different areas of our lives, including social,

emotional, intellectual, spiritual, occupational, environmental, physical and nutritional and how

in balance they are.

When our life is in balance, our Wellness Wheel will be round.

When our life is not in balance our Wellness Wheel may look and feel a little more like a flat

tire. A flat tire makes it difficult to steer straight, makes the ride bumpy, makes steering

difficult, may cause an accident and will likely cause us to not reach our destination. This is very

similar to when our life is not in balance.

Wellness is much more than physical health, exercise or nutrition. According to the World

Health Organization good health "is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being

and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity". Good health really covers the entire body,

mind and spirit being in balance". -Dr. Sears Wellness Institute

Our goal is to ride through life with as many areas as possible working smoothly and creating balance. It takes a mixture of what we call living a L.E.A.N life - Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, and Nutrition; in other words we move well, think well, eat well, and live well.

This year, 2020, has impacted every area of the wheel (all areas of our lives and holistic selves) and we are weary. What do we do? Try to fix it! We are always searching for was to "fix" our wheel and find that balance, often we turn to unhealthy behaviors that we hope will bring balance, but we can choose to take healthy steps.

A healthy response is to look for ways to bring balance that are realistic, kind to our bodies, hearts, and minds and will not disrupt others. Things like, eating well, socializing with safe people, exercising, mediation, stretching, prayer, therapy...the list is endless and that brings us to finding ways to cope, specifically What's with all the Christmas trees before Thanksgiving?

Healthy coping! We are doing something that brings feelings of joy and expectation, glitter, sparkle, and lights, some fun and beauty! A break; we are giving ourselves a break from the weariness of 2020, and that's OK, as a matter of fact it's a good thing. Give yourself permission to rest, have fun, and take a break. It is the A in LEAN, Attitude, and helps strengthen the L, Lifestyle. It why we take bubble baths, or dance in the kitchen, or wear silly socks. A little bit of something happy.

Putting all those decorations will not "fix" our situations, but it may fix our attitudes and lift our spirts and that is a good thing. So go Deck those halls if that's your thing! Have a little happy, We did and highly recommend it.
