Bringing Back Tablecloths

Tablecloths were once a staple in every kitchen and dining room, adding a touch of charm and elegance to the room and dining experience. I think it's time to bring it back!  They haven't completely been relegated to the vintage archives; I see a tablecloth gracing the pages of Southern Living Magazine or Magnolia from time to time, and maybe that's because they lend that Southern Hospitality vibe. But, I'm all for it! And I am Southern, so I think it works! Even if you aren't, a nice tablecloth can be a fun or playful decor addition.

In our home, we use cloth napkins as an environmentally friendly option. I have found that I get a lot of joy from the designs, look, and feel of the napkins. Adding a tablecloth only elevates the situation!

Why Tablecloths?

  • Add a sense of elegance and elevation to the meal or the room.

  • Tablecloths are an inexpensive way to change the decor to match the season or your mood.

  • Yes, you have to wash them - but they also protect your table.

  • Tablecloths open the door for the possibilities of chargers and placemats to give you even more decorating options!

  • They can be used to help a room whose color scheme is overly warm or cool. My house has warm floors and drapes, a cool-toned cloth can help bring balance to the room.

  • Tablecloths can create an airy feel to a room.

Tips

  • When buying tablecloths look for wrinkle-free options.

  • Fold and smooth immediately after washing to reduce wrinkles.

  • If you are serving messy foods like Sloppy Joe or spaghetti consider adding placemats.

  • You don't need to use tablecloths daily, try starting with special events or just to add a little occasional ambiance.

  • Cricut people, the Cricut irons work great!

  • Measure your table before purchasing.

  • In Tablecloth speak, they are usually labeled "Oblong" for rectangular tables.

  • Decide how long you want the "drop" to be - how long it hangs over the sides. You'll need to add those inches when purchasing a tablecloth.

Tablecloths can be purchased at almost any store that carries home goods and at thrift and vintage stores (or ask my mom!). My favorite designs can be found at Anthropologie and West Elm.  They have lots of options, reinforcing my point that tablecloths still have a place in our homes! Long live the Tablecloth!
