Baked Sweet Onions

Do you love Vidalia onions? Yummy, sweet onions that can be used in so many ways!


A simple and delicious way to enjoy sweet Vidalia onions, this baked dish is rich, flavorful, and perfect as a side for any meal.


Ingredients:

  • 4 large Vidalia onions

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, divided

  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Parmesan, or Gruyère work well)

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)


Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice off the top and bottom so they sit flat. Use a small knife or spoon to hollow out the center slightly, creating a small well.

  3. Add Butter & Seasoning: Place each onion in a baking dish and add 1 tbsp of butter into the well of each onion. Sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

  4. Bake: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 35-40 minutes, until the onions are tender.

  5. Add Cheese: Remove foil, sprinkle cheese on top of each onion, and bake uncovered for another 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted and slightly golden.

  6. Garnish & Serve: Sprinkle with fresh thyme or parsley and serve warm.
